What counts as showing the salary? Is there a set way that I have to do this?

We recognise that employers take different approaches to setting salaries – and we’re not pushing a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to showing salary info on job ads.

Here’s a list of options for showing salary info – options which we believe make it possible for every employer to commit to showing salary info on all of their job ads:

If there’s a fixed salary or fixed salary band for the role → say what it is.

This is the clearest way to provide salary info on a job ad. If there's a fixed salary range, it's useful to indicate if the starting salary will be at the bottom of the range, or if it's flexible depending on experience.

If you don't have a fixed salary or banding for the role → give a reasonable salary range or a guide figure for the salary.

Showing a reasonable salary range or providing an ‘up to’, ‘from’ or ‘around’ figure gives people an understanding of the salary level, and clear parameters for any negotiation process.

If you've got a higher degree of flexibility on the salary → give a wider salary range or a ‘starting from’ figure, with some extra context.

While it provides the least clarity on salary and puts more emphasis on negotiation, this approach might be appropriate in exceptional cases where there’s a genuinely high degree of flexibility on the salary. We recommend adding contextual information alongside the figure, to help people understand the degree of flexibility and your approach to salary setting for the role.

What do I need to do to accredit as a recruitment agency, job board or hiring platform?

Recruitment agencies, job boards and hiring platforms can all take the We Show the Salary pledge here. As well as showing the salary on roles you're advertising in your own team, you'll also need to show salary info on all of the jobs you advertise on behalf of clients. Head back up the page to here to see our list of options for showing salary info – we hope the flexibility that these options provide will make it be possible for you to bring your clients on this journey.

What benefits do I get by taking the pledge and accrediting as a We Show the Salary employer?

Taking the We Show the Salary pledge sends a clear signal to your employees and job applicants that you're committed to showing salary info on job ads. Here are some of the ways it'll benefit you and your teams:

Display the We Show the Salary Employer logo: You can use your accreditation logo on your careers site and recruitment packs, as well as other channels such as social, email marketing and internal comms, to show your employees and job applicants that you understand the importance of salary info, and are committed to always providing this information on job ads.

Feature in our employer directory: You'll appear in our searchable directory of accredited We Show the Salary employers, jobs boards and recruitment agencies, right here on our website. It'll give jobseekers an easy way to find job opportunities from employers who show the salary.

Promotion and publicity opportunities: We'll look for opportunities to promote your involvement in the We Show the Salary campaign, from posts on our social media channels, to potential opportunities for participation in media interviews too.

Play a part in driving forward this important social change: Taking the We Show the Salary pledge means you're adding your voice to our call to action for all UK employers to show salary info on their job ads. It's a practical step that you can take to help make this change happen, for the benefit all employees and jobseekers in the UK.

What does it cost to accredit as a We Show the Salary employer?

Charities and registered Community Interest Companies can take the pledge and accredit as a We Show the Salary employer for free.

Other kinds of employer pay an annual accreditation fee based on the number of employees they have in the UK. We keep the cost as low as possible to make it straightforward for any employer to take part. The fees are:

£50 for 1-49 employees

£100 for 50-99 employees

£150 for 100-249 employees

£200 for 250+ employees

These fees contribute to the running costs of the We Show the Salary campaign, including our programme of quality assurance checks on job ads for accredited employers, and support our ongoing work to drive forward this social change across the UK. If you're ready to take the pledge, here's where you can do it.

We want every employer to be able to take the We Show the Salary pledge, so if the accreditation fee is a barrier for you, please get in touch with us on team@weshowthesalary.org.uk and we will try to find a solution.
